The same autonomy that accelerates science can accelerate harmful workflows
Anchor evidence: Anthropic's September 2026 threat-intelligence report describes disrupted misuse across cyber operations and other harm areas. It is company threat intelligence, not a population-wide measurement of AI misuse.

Planning, coding, tool use, persistence, and adaptation are useful for legitimate work. The same general capabilities can also be redirected toward harmful objectives.
The transition signal is not simply better advice. It is AI coordinating multiple stages of a task, choosing tools, processing results, and continuing with less human intervention.
Cybersecurity is digitally native: observation, code, tools, logs, and actions can all exist in machine-readable environments. That makes it an early domain for both beneficial and malicious agentic workflows.
Threat reports document detected cases. They can reveal real patterns, but they cannot by themselves tell us the prevalence of misuse across the entire ecosystem or how many incidents remain unseen.
If attackers automate reconnaissance and iteration, defenders need faster detection, containment, credential controls, anomaly monitoring, provenance, and machine-speed response.
A powerful model with no external permissions is different from the same model with shell access, credentials, browsers, APIs, and the ability to act. Risk is a property of the whole system.
Human oversight is useful only when the human sees meaningful evidence, has time to intervene, and controls consequential permissions. A ceremonial approval click is not robust oversight.
The governance frontier is shifting from content safety toward action safety: identity, permissions, observability, containment, auditability, and reliable interruption of autonomous loops.
Hype check: capability is not the same as reliability, a candidate is not the same as a validated outcome, and an observed case is not the same as ecosystem-wide prevalence. Track evidence, replication, permissions and real-world validation.
