From answer generator to research participant
Anchor event: OpenAI reported an AI-generated Navier–Stokes solution with a human-readable write-up and Lean formalization. The result is scientifically important, but independent mathematical scrutiny remains essential.

A research assistant retrieves, summarizes, codes, and explains. A research actor can participate in a longer loop: propose an approach, use tools, inspect results, revise, and produce a checkable artifact.
The important unit is no longer a single answer. It is a sequence of linked actions in which each result becomes evidence for the next decision.
Large groups of agents can explore many hypotheses simultaneously. Their advantage is breadth and iteration speed; their weakness is that scale can also multiply correlated errors.
A formal proof system such as Lean checks whether a formalized argument follows specified rules. That is stronger than persuasive prose, but it does not automatically settle whether assumptions, formalization choices, novelty, or interpretation are correct.
Independent experts still matter. Humans inspect framing, assumptions, relevance, provenance, novelty, and whether the formal object corresponds to the scientific claim being made.
If thousands of machine workers can explore technical branches in parallel, the scarce resource may shift from generating ideas to selecting, validating, reproducing, and governing them.
Autonomous loops can create convincing but wrong research faster. Provenance, reproducibility, sandboxing, audit trails, adversarial checking, and independent replication become core infrastructure.
Track how much of a consequential research loop a system can reliably close—not merely how intelligent its individual answers appear.
Hype check: capability is not the same as reliability, a candidate is not the same as a validated outcome, and an observed case is not the same as ecosystem-wide prevalence. Track evidence, replication, permissions and real-world validation.
